Diversion rate

The share of discarded material kept out of landfill.

Last reviewed October 27, 2026 by repallet.org editors.

A diversion rate divides material diverted from landfill by total material discarded. It can be calculated by weight or by count, and programs differ on what counts as diverted, especially burning for energy.

For pallets, reuse, repair, remanufacture and grinding are diverted in almost every scheme. Returned pooled pallets usually count too, since nothing was disposed of. Combustion with energy recovery is counted by some programs and not others.

The Pallet Fate Report calculates diversion by pallet count, includes pooled returns, leaves plastic out, and has a switch for combustion. State which rule you used next to the number. See diversion rate.

Two sites with identical handling can report very different rates if one counts by weight and the other by count, or if one includes energy recovery. Comparing rates across companies is only meaningful when the method is the same, so publish yours.
