Pallet program for a third-party logistics warehouse

A 3PL handles pallets that belong to clients, to poolers and to itself. Ownership drives everything: client and pooled pallets follow the client's or owner's instructions, and only the 3PL's own discards are its waste. Write pallet handling into each client agreement and track it by client.

Where the pallets come from

Client inbound, often one-way; pooled pallets under client rental agreements; the 3PL's own stock pallets.

Varies by client. Track pallet type per client rather than for the building.

Storage and handling

Mark which stacks belong to which client. Mixed stacks are where pooled pallets get scrapped by mistake.

Program checklist

  1. List each client's pallet arrangement: pooled, one-way, exchange.
  2. Agree in writing who owns discarded pallets and who pays for removal.
  3. Return pooled pallets through the client's pooler account.
  4. Send the 3PL's own discards to reuse or grinding.
  5. Report by client, so each can use the numbers in its own scope 3 reporting.

What to track

  • Pallets per client by fate
  • Pooled pallets misrouted to scrap (target: none)
  • Removal cost recharged per client

Model it

The Pallet Fate Report opens with a starting mix for a 3pl warehouse. Replace it with your own counts; the figures are an illustration, not a benchmark.
