Pallet reuse on a university campus

On a campus, pallets arrive at dining halls, labs, central stores and construction sites. The fix is a single collection point and a regular reuse pickup, run by facilities with the sustainability office keeping the numbers. Keep lab pallets that held chemicals out of student DIY projects.

Where the pallets come from

Central receiving, dining, labs, athletics, construction.

Varied, with many small deliveries. Student sustainability groups often ask for pallets for projects; route them only clean, HT-marked pallets.

Storage and handling

A central pallet yard; building docks hold pallets only until the next facilities run.

Program checklist

  1. Map where pallets arrive on campus.
  2. Route them to one collection point on a schedule.
  3. Contract a reuse pickup from that point.
  4. Screen lab and chemical pallets out of any student reuse program.
  5. Publish diversion figures in the campus sustainability report.

What to track

  • Pallets collected centrally per month
  • Share reused vs ground

Model it

The Pallet Fate Report opens with a starting mix for a university campus. Replace it with your own counts; the figures are an illustration, not a benchmark.
