Short ton
The US ton of 2,000 pounds, used by EPA's waste data and factors.
A short ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907 kilograms. EPA's waste statistics and both WARM and the GHG Emission Factors Hub express material quantities in short tons; WARM's documentation states that 0.907 metric ton equals one short ton.
To convert pallets to short tons, multiply the count by the average weight in pounds and divide by 2,000. For example, 4,800 pallets a year at 41 lb is 98.4 short tons. The Pallet Fate Report shows this arithmetic on every result.
Don't mix metric tonnes of wood with per-short-ton factors: the result would be about 10% off. See weighing your pallet stream.
Metric tonnes are about 1.1 short tons, so a figure in tonnes needs converting before it meets EPA's factors. Most scales and haul invoices in the US already report in pounds or short tons, which is one less conversion to get wrong.
